Your domain name is the one piece of digital real estate you actually own. It's your address online, your brand in URLs, and a trust signal to every customer who types it into their browser. Choosing the wrong one costs you credibility and SEO. Choosing the right one is easy if you follow a few rules.
The Rules
1. Use .com If Possible
.com is still the default. When someone hears your business name, they'll type yourname.com without thinking. If the .com isn't available, .co and .net are acceptable alternatives. Avoid .biz, .info, or obscure TLDs — they look spammy.
2. Keep It Short
Shorter domains are easier to remember, easier to type, and look better on business cards. "SummitPlumbing.com" beats "SummitPlumbingServicesLLC.com" every time.
3. Make It Speakable
If you can't say your domain in a radio ad and have people spell it correctly, it's too complicated. Avoid hyphens, numbers, and unusual spellings.
4. Include Your City (Maybe)
"DenverPlumbing.com" tells Google and customers exactly where you are and what you do. But "SmithPlumbing.com" is stronger if you plan to expand beyond one city. Choose based on your growth plans.
5. Match Your Business Name
If your business is Summit Plumbing Co., your domain should be SummitPlumbing.com — not FixMyPipes.com. Consistency between your business name and domain builds brand recognition.
Common Mistakes
- Buying from the wrong registrar. Use Namecheap, Google Domains, or Cloudflare. Avoid GoDaddy's aggressive upselling and domain privacy charges.
- Not buying the domain yourself. Your domain should be in YOUR account, not your web developer's. If they own it, they can hold it hostage.
- Forgetting to renew. Set auto-renew. A lapsed domain can be bought by someone else within hours.
- Keyword-stuffing the domain. "BestCheapPlumberDenverCO.com" looks spammy and hurts credibility.
